As it is I am running the Perak Bar Blog and Website (Coming Soon) as well as a soon to be Perak Turf Tennis Fraternity blog. I barely have time to keep up much less run a blog anymore...

Anyway as some or maybe most of you might have known - I'm officially hitched! :) Married a beautiful woman whom I think is perfectly suited for me and hopefully I am for her as well :)

Now its busy busy time preparing for the wedding and I think my wallet is the one thing that feels the pain most! hahaha... but then again... it IS getting lighter by the minute. Weddings are expensive! It is a very very expensive affair... everything costs money... cards, food, drinks, gifts, photos etc etc... no wonder so many people go into the wedding business!

Ah well... if I have time I will change the blog around a bit... its getting to boring looking...

till next time... ciao...Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-48108601914099677072010-09-23T14:08:00.000+08:002010-09-23T14:08:44.783+08:00Hello Blackberry Torch 9800Precursor to this is that I am now officially old-er! 34! damn it I feel old...

Ah well... with age comes wisdom right? Now where is the magic pill I'm supposed to take to get that wisdom that I am supposed to have? :)

On the up side... My sisters and my friends got together and bought me a Blackberry Torch 9800! IT ROCKS!! :)

Wanna know what it looks like? Well here you go...

What function does it have? Well lets see... it does everything a blackberry should.. i.e. emails, BBM etc etc... and it combines the functionality of a touchscreen ala iphone :) So best of both worlds! and it also has a qwerty keyboard underneath if u don't feel like texting with the touch pad... :)

On top of the great present I got from friends I got another great gift from wifey to be! I got a 18-200 lense for the camera! The one I have been harping on to everyone and anyone that I should be getting for easy use and travel...

So all in all.... it was a great day! Woo Hoo...Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-8648100273452618052010-08-11T00:15:00.000+08:002010-08-11T00:16:08.883+08:00Cheesecake @ Macoys

I just had a lamb shank at Macoys just now and it was delicious!

If you are wondering why there is no photo of that but only my dessert well... All I can say is... I was hungry mar... :)

They had a dinner set which camew with mushroom soup, the lamb shank and choice of either cheesecake, chocolate cake or icecream. since we had 3 sets we had all 3 desserts! :) it was really good! It only cost me RM49.90 (I think so... Or was it 46.90?) For the set. Worth every cent imho!

Well good night folks... And to all my Muslim Friends... Selamat Berpuasa!

The reason? well... its cos I am now (for this legal year) the Perak Bar Blogmaster. I run the blog for Perak Bar and that entails me sourcing articles, news, updates and such for the blog for the benefit of the rest of the members.

Since I am the Perak Bar Blogmaster as well as the I.T. Committee chairman I started the Perak Bar Facebook Page as well as the Perak Bar Twitter account (@PerakBar). So been busy updating those that I barely have time to do my own stuff much less update my own blog.

On the bright side being busy is better than being bored! :)

Oh and for those who don't know... I'm getting hitched! :) The date for our wedding dinner is fixed for 1/10/2011. Invitations will be sent later... Its still some time away.

I think its time for me to get back to the other pile of work on my table. I can never seem to clear my table of the files at all! Which may be a good sign! hahaha... means I have work to do! Now all I have to do is to collect my bills...

Till next time... ciaoKenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-6250700209500819732010-02-24T14:03:00.001+08:002010-02-24T15:08:21.814+08:00Year of the Tiger

For those who want to know your luck and which type of zodiac animals are good for you :)

Apparently dragons need to be more mobile to improve my business :)

Oh and I hate being forced to do anything and I won't do it until I want to! :) ( how true!!) As you would probably note from the site www.stymylo.blogspot.com ; if you take the time to check it out, is that most of the stuff would be for women :) Hence you would then guess my involvement in the business... hahaha... :)

NOt really lar... My views have been taken into account for sure... (I hope!) and when it comes to Men's wear and accessories... its a tad bit more difficult. Guys usually don't go shopping online for a wallet or stuff like that do they? I may be mistaken of course...

Oh and if there is some bag/accessory you like or want and its not on the website you can email them directly and she will search for you. Preferably if there is a picture given would be better. Model and Brand number as well... :)

I know a few customers who have purchased the goods and no complains! All the goods are ORIGINAL but at a MUCH MUCH LOWER price! :) Cheaper than u would be able to find anywhere... So if thats not a good deal I don't know what is! :)

The site specialises in Italian Brands but many other brands are also available. So drop by for a visit and check it out! You won't be disappointed unless the bag you want is already sold!Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-79980781778424710942009-11-10T14:00:00.003+08:002009-11-10T14:15:07.128+08:00Krabi 2009It seems that whenever a bunch of friends decide to go for any holidays it always ends up with just a few of us going and always some last minute cancellations... The same thing happened for thsi trip too. Initially there were about 10 ppl going. Then one broke up with gf so out. One got pregnant so she was out so her friend and bf also out. Anyhow, its not the first time I have been in the papers... luckily so far its been for the right things. Previous one was as the NYLC Deputy Chair but it was a chinese paper (I have a copy of it somewhere...). Anyway, for those who missed it and especially for those who don't care if they missed it or not... hahahha it is reproduced below... I believe the date for this is erm... 19/3/2009? Photo was taken at the Malaysian Bar AGM.

Upholding the cause of justice

PUTIK LADA
By JANET CHAI PEI YING

First formed to look into abolishing the ‘seven-year’ rule, the National Young Lawyers Committee of the Bar Council has since gone on to become the voice of the public.

A DOG ran into a butcher’s shop and grabbed a roast off the counter. Fortunately, the butcher recogni-sed the dog as belonging to his neighbour, who happened to be a lawyer.

Incensed at the theft, the butcher called up his neighbour and said: “Hey, if your dog stole a roast from my shop, would you be liable for the cost of the meat?”

The lawyer replied: “Of course, how much was the roast?”

“US$7.98 (RM29.35).”

A few days later the butcher received a cheque in the mail for US$7.98 (RM29.35). Attached to it was an invoice that read: Legal Consultation Service: US$150 (RM551.50).

The above is one of the many jokes (this one is considered as mild) on the Internet about lawyers.

Young guns: (From left) Richard Wee, Roger Tan, HR Dipendra, Seira Sacha Abu Bakar, Lee Shih, Janet Chai, Kenny Lai, Fam Yu Min and Lai Chee Hoe posing after the Malaysian Bar’s annual meeting last Saturday.

Lawyers are often portrayed as greedy people who are only out to enrich themselves from the miseries of others. This is really sad because the role of lawyers has often been misunderstood.

For us lawyers in peninsular Malaysia, the main object of the Malaysian Bar, as stated in section 42 of the Legal Profession Act, is to uphold the cause of justice without regard to its own interests or that of its members, uninfluenced by fear or favour.

This is one aspect of the legal profession which law students and young lawyers are constantly reminded of.

Today, of the 12,900 lawyers in Peninsular Malaysia, close to 40% or 5,500 are lawyers who have been in practice for not more than seven years.

Young lawyers should know that lawyering is not just about making money. It is also about undertaking the sacred duty of upholding justice without fear and favour.

This explains the importance of the role of the National Young Lawyers Committee of the Bar Council (NYLC), which plays a pivotal role not only in the affairs of the Bar, but also in our nation.

The NYLC was set up by the Malaysian Bar in the 1990s following a resolution at one of its annual general meetings.

At its inception, the primary focus was to abolish the “seven-year rule” in that lawyers who have less than seven years of practice at the Bar are prohibited from holding any position at the Bar Council and at their respective state bar committees.

The NYLC’s struggle saw success in 2006 when the Legal Profession Act was amended by abolishing this restriction, which then saw young lawyers of less than seven years of practice offering to serve the Malaysian Bar.

To date, the NYLC is pleased to announce that almost every State Bar Committee has at least one young lawyer representation.

This not only denotes that the young are interested and concerned, but their election also shows that their competence is recognised by the members of the Bar.

Over the years following its formation, the NYLC continued to look into issues surrounding the practice of the young lawyers at the Bar, one of which was the working conditions.

A nationwide survey was conducted which looked into the reasons for young lawyers leaving practice and, for some of them, the jurisdiction.

Forums were conducted at law conferences to look into the working conditions of young lawyers in other jurisdictions.

All these were done as it was recognised that this generation would be the future leaders of the Bar and society and it was therefore pertinent that the best were retained.

Over and above the interests of its young members, the NYLC has, on its own and, in joint efforts with other non-governmental organisations, provided a platform where views of the public on national issues were aired in its civil society initiative.

As part of its continuing civil society initiatives, this column, Putik Lada, was launched as an avenue to voice out the aspirations and views of the young. Putik Lada, since its inception, has discussed issues concerning the profession to issues surrounding the public.

None of the above could have been done without the efforts of the young lawyers who have served tirelessly on the NYLC, armed with much energy, and oratory and organising skills. Each member of the NYLC also possesses a unique and distinct character.

After the Malaysian Bar’s annual meeting last Saturday, a group of new NYLC members have taken over.

As a special tribute to the outgoing Chair of NYLC, Roger Tan, who has also retired from the Bar Council after four years of tireless service to the Bar, the NYLC members have this to say:

“Roger Tan is best known to the Malaysian Bar as the Webmaster, who single handedly set up the Malaysian Bar website (www.malaysianbar.org.my), which is now not only internationally known but which has also become a part of our lives today.

“There is so much to write about Roger that it is an almost impossible task, in view of the constraint of words, and considering his many achievements and contributions to the Malaysian Bar.

“In short, Roger is an inspiration and a role model to us young lawyers to be the best that we can be.”
Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-65140310910116887092009-11-06T15:43:00.001+08:002009-11-06T16:10:26.432+08:00Work! I just got back from Italy... well not just but its been a couple of weeks already. Just had to sort out the photos and also all the work that my 10 day absence had racked up... Had a busy 2 weeks in court as well... HEarings after hearings... Finally I have some time to blog about the trip. :)

The trip didn't really start on a great note cos we were delayed in Bangkok for about an hour n half which meant we had to really hurry when we reached Rome-Fiumincino airport to make our connecting flight to Genoa which was abt 4 hours later. With the delay we had like 2 hours or so to make the connecting. A lot of time you would think rite? but Noo.... we missed the damned flight. Rome airport luggage control is shite! bags took like 45 mins to come out! an dthen we had to run to teh next terminal and when we got there we were abt 10 mins beofre the last check in time. And teh 4 people in fornt of us that they took to process took 15 mins. By the time we were at counter we were told.. sorry gate closed. No exceptions.... vafan cuolo! (basically f#@$ you!). DEspite some frantic calls from my sister to speak to teh Italians... it was no good. We had to buy tickets to Milan as teh flight was abt 2 hours later... the next flight to Genoa was in the evening a good 9 hours later...

the empty Terminal C at the Rome Airport

Mum with all the luggage we were carrying

After all that, we finally got to Milan n then genoa. Luckily smart ol me brought his books, mp3 player as well as his trusty Archos AV player! :)

Our first meal at the Milan Airport!

I will update the rest of teh trip later! AM so exhausted from dunno what.. probably lack of sleep and too much alcohol! :P

It was a fun trip. We stayed over at G Hotel. Very nice hotel. excellent location... right next to Gurney Plaza. They even gave us their own gelato upon checking in! And the minibar was complimentary and refilled everyday! good eh? :) Thanks to Wei Lin from Penang bar whose connection got us good rates.

The games went ok for me. Some games were called off beacuse some of our perak members could not make it for the trip and some were called off because the penang did not have enough players. But overall Penang beat Perak by 7-6. It was an impressive showing by Perak despite its numbers.

I even had to be called back into action as goalkeeper for the football match. Managed to keep a clean sheet and we beat Penang 1-0 with a spectacular free kick from Kiko! :P hahaha it was goooood!

Oh and we whipped PEnang in tennis as well... 3-0. So it was really good :P

for the full report and some more photos go to:-

http://perakbar.blogspot.com/2009/07/report-on-penang-perak-bar-games-2009.html

or just click th elink above :)Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-62244154770462911652009-07-07T21:35:00.000+08:002009-07-07T21:37:25.720+08:00Train to KL

Am now on my way to KL now by train and I am blogging from my phone. You could also reserve your seat as well... :)
So anyways... Just got on the train and brought my trusty old novel to read in case the tv programme available sucks!
Maybe I should just sleep? Ah well... We'll see how it goes.
Anyhoo... Greetings from the train. Oh and I LOVE mobile blogging. The difference between the 2 places are that at the turf club, tennis is played on grass. :) Mind you, playing on grass is not that easy! Ok... maybe the courts we have here are not as well maintained as wimbledon courts but what the heck... its still a good surface to play on.

I count myself to be an above average player. I had lessons when I was young and was even assisting the coach in training the younger ones so not too bad lar... :P Played a few tournaments... only won the school ones never the state tourneys or PJ Open which I took part once. Kncoked out in the 1st round by some young ciku! Who later turned out to be a state junior champion!

What was I saying... oh ya... tennis on grass courts is not that easy to master. Sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce as high and the kick of the ball is sometimes irregular... serves that come in tend to slide. Now I know why the people who do well on this surface tends to serve and volley! Less chances of the ball bouncing differently and catching them off guard! :)

Got myself a new racquet as well... Babolat PureDrive... supposed to buy it from my sister's boyfriend but was informed that no need to buy cos his dad said to give it to me! YAY! Score! hahaha... thanks uncle! The last time I got myself a racquet was when I was erm... 19? so that would make it abt 14 years ago... so my racquets ARE dated! and no longer in production anymore! :)

Its good to play tennis again consistently though... one of the few things I am quite accomplished at. As in I can do almost everything the pros do but not as good! hahahha :P

Oklar... need to get back to work...Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-4266902882163747852009-06-23T14:10:00.004+08:002009-07-01T16:37:45.348+08:00Congratulations Kevin & Kathy
I attended a wedding over the weekend at the spanking new Tower Regency Hotel in Ipoh. The occasion of Kevin and Kathy's wedding. Congratulations mate! :)

Food was surprisingly good for a hotel function. Only downside to the whole affair was the blackouts ( I hope you got some discount from the hotel Kev!) It happened not once BUT TWICE! What is this man! Where are the back up generators? Heck! Where are the emergency lights? If it wasn't for the flashes and some people with torchlights the whole place would be in total darkness!

Ah well... some things are beyond the bride and groom's control. All in all, it was a fun evening with friends :) I heard there was even karaoke later after the dinner! The rooms looked nice though! :)

At any rate... My Heartiest Congratulations to the Wedded couple Kevin & Kathy. May you have a wonderful life ahead together and may there be the sound of the pitter patter of little feet soon!Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-39210063825713922672009-06-18T15:04:00.003+08:002009-06-23T14:03:41.597+08:00Tanjung Tualang - UPDATEDOver the last weekend, abunch of friends and I decided to go over to Tanjung Tualang for Dinner. This plan had been on the back burner for like 6 months already but we finally did it! AND it was GOOOOD!

If you didn't really know yet I am not a huge fan of prawns (the bigger the better!) BUT the prawns we had... all 4 kgs worth of it was really really really fresh and succulent. We had it steamed with chinese wine as well as coeked in oil... wow!

I promise to add photos in once I get my lazy ass to download the same from my camera and put them up... :)

WE also had fish, sotong, Crabs, oyster pancakes (Oh Chien), taufu and fried rice. Of all the food we had, I was disappointed with the fried rice and oyster pancakes. Friend rice was not salty enough and lacked the oomph whilst the Oyster pancakes were too oily and had too much flour...

UPDATE! The pictures of food as promised:-

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The Perak BAr Spcial Committee which I am not in charge of this year but part of is organising a Treasure Hunt slated for the 20th June this month. After months of preparation etc... it may just come to a waste of our time and effort. Why you say? Well... to date there is only ONE (1), Uno, Satu, Yi car signed up for it which is mine (4 of us). Probably can get another one or 2 more cars to confirm. That is shy of our great target of... wait for it!... TEN (10) cars!

I just never understand it... everything is done for them, all they have to do is probably pay some money and attend! Even that they cannot do? Whats wrong with them lar... Sometimes it becomes a waste of time to even think of anything to do for the Perak Bar...

Perak Bar does NOT care for anything or anyone else except themselves... and when I say Perak Bar I saya majority of them.. NOT all but a huge percentage of them. There a few who are selfless and non-apathetic (Is this even a word??).

Ah well... I guess one gets used to it...

2nd rant today is about the sports committee which I am in charge. I literally have to beg ppl to take part in sports... Its like I have nothing better to do in my life. Other than the usual suspects the rest of the Perak Bar does not participate in sports in one way or the other! Heck if you can't play the sport... support those who do! Thats the least you can do...wait... I stand corrected... you can sit at home and do nothing (THAT would be the least they could do!!)

As it stands.. I have problems finding convenors for volleyball, netball (the only women's sport in teh games) and FOOTBALL! (it is supposed to be the most important game of the Perak-Penang annual games) Now no one wants to play the sport at all! Wat lar....

sigh... apathy... thy name is Perak Bar!Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-6238240942182452852009-06-03T14:43:00.004+08:002009-06-03T14:54:53.962+08:00My new Phone!I was looking at my previous entries and I've just come to realise that I have been very remiss with my postings. I should update my blog more often. :) I will try to... I promise...

ANyhow... I got myself a new phone!! Yay!! Well actually my sis got me a new phone! Thanks Ann! :P

I was previously using a Blackberry Curve 8300 and then a Curve 8310 which actually both look the same. Only difference is that the 8310 has the GPS function which I have used a total of ermm... 1 time? :) I don't really need to find my way with a gps in ipoh you know? hahaha

Heres is a picture of my previous phone! I love it!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_at97H48m3UM/SiYc-KtlWfI/AAAAAAAAAIw/6ZiTnJ3fZWk/s320/Blackberry+Curve+8300.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342989862274685426" />

Now here is a picture of my latest phone! I love it even more! Woo Hoo!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_at97H48m3UM/SiYdISoxg5I/AAAAAAAAAI4/GnRN92KijIg/s320/Blackberry+Curve+8900.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342990036200686482" />

GPS and WIFI enabled. ONly thing missing from it is the 3G which I have not found a cause to really use it so nvm lor.. :)

Why use a blackberry? Well for one I can blackberry messenger my sis in Italy for free... well not really free but using my data services. which is a heck of a lot cheaper than RM0.50 per message!

I hear now that DIGI may come up with blackberry as well? Hopefully its cheaper. If it was cheaper everyone would sign up with DIGI for the unlimited data package. Now I'm paying something like RM30 for the Blackberry Internet Service and another RM20 for the 5MB data plan. If I wanted the unlimited plan I will have to pay RM138. MAxis is killing me man... and lately the blackberry service sucks! I wonder how it is on Celcom?

Ah well... only in time will I ever know... :)Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-610323393643290992009-06-02T14:08:00.002+08:002009-06-02T14:27:22.153+08:00Lasek SurgeryFor those who don't know, I just had my Lasek eye surgery last Tuesday. It was well... painless ( Thank God!) :)I have been meaning to do this surgery for teh last 2 years but have always seem to be putting it off... for one reason or another. I guess the excuse always was that the surgery had to be done in Penang or KL and never in Ipoh. Now that Optimax is in Ipoh and surgeries can be done on site I think I just ran out of excuses...

So off I went one fine afternoon after court and got myself in there for an eye check up. That took about 10 mins plus another 30 mins of explaining the various technologies and techniques for the laser eye surgery.

Found out after the eye check up that I had somewhat thin corneas and high power so the only procedure available to me was LASEK surgery (Not Lasik) wich is actually an acronym of Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis... yeah a mouthful! :)

Basically the main difference between the Lasik and Lasek is that the do not make any incisions on my flap... (I know! INCISIONS!??) haha... What they do for Lasek is that they put a ring on your eye (you can't feel a darn thing at that time) and they pour some drops of 20% alcohol on the eye. and leave it there for about 30 seconds or so and then after the wash it with saline, they then proceed to peel back your eye flap (yes peel like orange! - but again... bo pain at all... no feeling at all actually!) and then after they do that well they laser your corneas for about 26 seconds on my right eye and 23 seconds on my left. And then they wash your eyes with some really cold saline and then they roll the flap back and add a extended wear contact lens and lo n behold its DONE! Total time for surgery = 2 mins per eye. (but plus cleaning etc it would take abt 10 mins more or so) Total prep time = 1 hour before surgery. and then you rest for about half an hour and then the doc checks your vision etc and u r done! Can't drive back though cos the eyes would be very photo sensitive.

The next week or so is a series of eye drops and artificial tears. Never been more "sensitive" in my life before! Always crying! hahha :)

Now its aweek later and they just removed my contacts from the eyes. Vision is slightly blurry still but I am assured that they would improve in the next few days. Oh and I am still "sensitive" thought not as much cos I only have to drop the tears in whenever i feel its dry. :)

Was it worth it? I'll let you guys know in a week or so. All I can say that its a relieve to know that I may not have to wear my spectacles again... for the near future anyway! :)

For more information you could check out www.optimax.com.my

If you do want to do it... say I recommended ok... there is an introducer fee given to me! hahaha rm100 only lar... haha i need to pay for my surgery too right! :)Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-36862203938359810762009-04-29T15:21:00.003+08:002009-04-29T15:26:44.967+08:00Did you read this?I was interviewed by the Malaysian Insider sometime last year after the MArch Elections... I don't know if anyone other than me n a few friends read it but I thought I should save the page some where before it goes missing completely :) hahaha

So here is the link :-

http://m.themalaysianinsider.com/articles.php?id=1050-life-back-to-normal-after-the-polls-tsunami

and here is the article in full:-

Malaysia

Life back to normal, after the polls tsunami

[The limestone hills of Ipoh. — pictures by Danny Lim]
Perak is DANNY LIM’s third stop in his tour of the five Pakatan Rakyat-ruled states.

JUNE 26 — "I don't feel anything, no changes, the federal government is the same. Even Tajol Rosli's photo is still up. 100 days and his photo is still everywhere."

The Chinese fortysomething teacher of a Sekolah Kebangsaan in Ipoh who notes the persistence of the previous menteri besar of Perak's visage in schools and government departments is unfazed by politics.

She has lived her entire life in Perak; born, raised and worked in Ipoh. She insists on being quoted anonymously so let's call her Mrs Leong. Her life is anchored by her roots in Ipoh and her job, and she will not be budged.

"As a civil servant, I'm not worried about which party takes over," says Leong with a weary smile. "Whatever changes, we just follow. They cannot disturb our years (of service). I will go to school every day until I retire at age of 58."

At the local markets, it's a different matter. When Leong goes to buy groceries, she sees locals feeling empowered by the political tsunami of March 8. "People there say, 'Go to DAP and complain lah'," notes Leong.

"They have a place to voice their opinion and they know they're going to be heard. They don't have to know somebody by 'cable' to get things done. All this while, you know somebody, then only it can be done."

Leong is of course troubled about the fuel price hikes, and will soon have to wok part-time to make ends meet. "But what can Pakatan Rakyat do about this actually?" she wonders. "So far we have yet to see."

[New housing development in Ipoh.] "It has come to a stage, after 50 years, that Malaysians, especially the Chinese, have come to accept that there's not much difference whoever is up there (in power)," says Leong.

As such she is pragmatic over issues like the early tussle for the Perak menteri besar position. "Actually you need a Malay to push a Malay. Everybody knows that. You put a Chinese, it'll be even more difficult, cannot move at all. So that's a very wise choice."

But if a new person is “up there” in Kuala Lumpur, Leong would be concerned. "Is it the right time (for PR), with everything escalating?" she asks. "In a way the Chinese are also frightened. What if it backfires on us? For (the) Chinese, most important is peace. Frankly, I don't mind whoever becomes the federal government. As long as it's not Anwar, that's all.”

Pakatan Rakyat's so-called “prime minister-in-waiting” left the education ministry in 1991 but as a teacher, Leong still experiences the legacy of his policies. "He created KBSR, (and with it) all these projects for the teachers to handle. Every year, got another extra (layer of work), it never ends.

"Because of Anwar's policies, he breaks up the classes, the non-Malays go for (Pendidikan) moral and then the Malays... are not moral?" Leong says. "So after 11 years, they still cannot get (ethnic) integration, so you have national service. What's the purpose of 11 years of school?"

When I later meet 32-year-old Hasrol at a Starbucks in Ipoh Parade, he was amenable to change – state or federal. The Batu Gajah-born credit recovery executive pleads for more development in Ipoh, even as he is generally positive about the change in the state administration.

There's a struggle to find the popular centre of Ipoh, spread out as it is across the Kinta Valley surrounded by limestone hills. Some would consider the old town fringing the Padang Besar as the historical core but it lacks the visual focal point of Menara Alor Star, or the escalating buzz of all the roads leading to Komtar in George Town. Which is why, for Hasrol, Ipoh is the most boring city.

[Ipoh resident Hasrol] Crossing over from rural Kedah to urban Perak, the closer I get to “development” the more fragmented and strident the vox populi. The largely rural and Malay Muslim population up north have little to complain with Kedah's smooth political transition. Barely a week after elections, Perak had the menteri besar squabble. Hasrol had no doubt that the menteri besar had to be a Malay.

Where the rubber tappers of Pedu in Kedah were straining to recount their problems, perhaps the urban Ipoh middle-class is more comfortable with articulating grouses to inquisitive strangers.

Like this one young Chinese professional involved in land development I met in a coffeeshop. He deals a lot with government departments so he's reluctant to reveal his name, so let's call him Fong. He has no qualms, however, about ranting about all and sundry to me in a dimly-lit coffeeshop.

Ipoh-born and educated in Australia, he is one of the "rare ones that can actually live and work in Ipoh". Fong believes Ipoh is getting the short end of the development stick because it has large Chinese majority, and has a history of backing Opposition parties. He rants about the town-planning in Ipoh, the traffic light system, the roads and the municipal council.

"The previous government developed outside Ipoh," says Fong. "Ipoh has no government university, no major government institution. What has the government actually put into Ipoh, nothing, it's all private...the town is practically dead at night. " Most of all, his familiarity with developers and the Land Office has him frustrated with the corrupt dealings and indiscriminate planning he claims to be privy to.

"Land developers are the ones who are always forced to 'pay money' to the government departments but they cannot say anything because they rely on them for approval," says Fong. "Our land title system, the law is almost perfect. But it's the people, the corruption and the justice system has not helped.

"Ipoh's developers are very fragmented. They develop small chunks here and there, not like in KL, where Sunway builds a whole township one shot. Here they rely on the town planner to co-ordinate, but it doesn’t happen. So this fella only builds what he wants."

You almost expect him to be jubilant about having a new state government. "I'm actually more of a BN person," Fong reveals. "I actually feel for Badawi, I don't believe he's doing enough, he's very soft, but his intentions are good, other than the Khairy part.

“I don't know why he lies though. The two biggest things - calling for elections and revising of the fuel price. No explanation was given. But I deal with the government so I know he was trying to do certain things within government.

"(Before elections) Badawi was trying to improve the public delivery system of the Land Office, where everybody knows the Land Office is very corrupted. His way of trying to clean up corruption was to set a deadline for everything, clear the backlog. But these type of things can't be done overnight."

While he is glad that his new MB is well-educated, Fong has doubts which are informed by the kind of racial politics that was supposedly left behind by March 8.

"He's still a member of PAS, and Ipoh is mostly DAP," says Fong. "When he came in, what did he do other than abolish parking fines for a certain period? That's unfair to people like me who actually paid the fines.

“I believe (the move) was nothing more than to gain popularity. Nizar will still try to be popular with the Malays, but as Chinese, what can we do? What can he do? If you give anything to the Chinese, the Malays will feel they're losing out, so I don't see a change in that respect."

What would he like to see? "Bring some proper development into Ipoh, rehabilitate the Kinta river. All they're talking about is reviving the tin industry. I've been going around looking for tin, I follow these miners... Ipoh, Perak where got any more tin?

[Taxi drivers waiting outside Ipoh Parade.] “Our biggest industry now is limestone quarrying and pottery. Ipoh's two biggest employers are in the semi-conductor industry - Unisem and Carsem - and they're the only reason why any young engineers actually stay in Ipoh.

"I think this new (state) government is not thinking of our future at all. They're trying to get support from the poor, because the poor forms a huge amount of votes. The poor always believe government should do more for them."

Which is not what I heard from the rural poor in Desa Keda. But it's getting late so I leave Fong's shroud of candid, but gloomy pessimism ("According to my friend, most reporters are leftists, all support Opposition," says Fong) for my next interview.

Is Fong the voice of urban middle-class Chinese disillusionment? His opinions are not unfamiliar amongt coffeeshop talk in Chinese communities.

Thirty-two-year-old Kenny Lai, a lawyer from Canning Gardens, offers another urban middle-class Chinese perspective that resumes the cautious optimism that has rung throughout much of my Pakatan states’ trek so far.

"People with something to prove usually have something better to offer," says Lai in his air-conditioned office. "The little that we have seen has been quite positive, like the cost-cutting measures and the review of certain contracts given by the previous government."

According to Lai, his friends and relatives were happy with the election results, but worried about riots. But Lai believes "Malaysians are smart enough to know that these kind of things don't happen anymore."

They were also skeptical about Nizar - "a lot of people thought he would go all Islamic nation" but Lai thinks the MB is a worldly-wise man. "I think PAS itself has realised (an Islamic nation) will never work in Malaysia, with the multiracial components here, and they've toned it down and it seems to bode well for them as well as for Pakatan Rakyat."

However, Lai is against MPs crossing over party lines. "It's an affront to the voters," he says. What he would like to see are MPs - especially from BN – to show some guts. “If you see something wrong, speak up... a lot of Malaysian ministers believe party is everything. But the people is everything, party is secondary. They should realise they work for us, and not that we work for them."Kenny Laihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05797728020473128487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781073254176846738.post-11842561813423906932009-04-21T14:01:00.003+08:002009-04-29T15:21:01.149+08:00Newest Addition to the family! After a year of bad news and unexpected losses; I am very happy to say that we have good news! For a long awaited holiday...

I think I need one... :) Then again who doesn't? Hahaha

The original plan was for 12 of us to go there. Then as usual drama always follows... One couple had to pull out cos he had a slipped disc... so down to 10 then. A couple of weeks before the day, one other couple also pulled out cos they were going to Japan at the end of the month... So down to 8 of us then. Hotels booked! Tickets to BKK booked and paid for. Transport from Ipoh to LCCT booked n paid for too! THEN... disaster for Gavin... whilst playing badminton he apparently landed on his good leg (he already had an operation on the other leg before) and apparently the leg could not take the impact and weight and he now has a complete tear on his Acute Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and slight meniscal damage. This means that he can't walk yet and has to forsake the trip as well...

So the merry dozen is down to the merry “half-dozen” BUT I hope it will still be fun though... its been ages since I've been to BKK. Its not that the guys do not love their partners/spouse/gf on this day nor do they dread the celebration of their love on this day. Its more of the commercialism that comes part and parcel of the day. If I wanted to buy roses last week it would inevitably cost me only about RM50 for a dozen ( I think), but if I were to do so tomorrow on v-day well.. its gonna cost at least double that minimum!

From a business point of view I can understand it. Its a real opportunity to make money! Scratch that... make a HELL LOT of money :) But pity us poor buggers who have to shell out for presents, flowers and dinner... sigh...

BUT as they say, one can never put a price on the happiness of your partner... trust me... a happy gf/wife/partner is the best thing you could ever wish for. If she is happy... trust me you will be happy too! :)

You can always tell yourself that you don't need to spend that kind of money on her AND she may agree with you... BUT remember she is a woman and a woman LOVEs to be wooed and showered with gifts and love... OOh and if you can do it in her office it would be EVEN better. You are sooo gonna get some that night! hahaha :)

NAh... I'm not trying to put a hamper on the day nor the need to spend the money on her. Please do so.. I think I will too :) Like I said be fore a happy GF is a happy Ken!

So Happy valentine's day to you all!

I'll share something I got from one of my friends...

To My Friends Who Are...........SINGLE
Love is like a butterfly.
